About Us
Why GEM?
The GEM (Gender Equity Movement) Youth is a youth-led, nonprofit organization leading a movement to change the conversation around gender equity, and focuses on empowering the next generation of leaders. We have 2 main teams that we function on: our advocacy team primarily runs our socials and blog, advocating for both gender equity as a whole, as well as other trending socioeconomic issues, shedding light on topics scarcely talked about. Our fundraising & events team plans and hosts events to raise funds for various initiatives and causes including Girl Up, Dignity Matters, Jane Doe, and even local women’s shelters.
This year, we are spearheading a campaign called Entrepreneurship for Equity, where we focus on highlighting women and nonbinary small business owners and empowering the next generation of youth to become successful entrepreneurs, creating businesses that prioritize gender equity and social impact. We aim to run workshops and panel discussions with female entrepreneurs, and even go as far as teaching the youth about entrepreneurship and financial literacy, encouraging them to start their own businesses.
Our Objectives
1. Promote Equality, Equity, and Inclusivity
Our goal is to advocate for and advance gender equality by challenging and changing discriminatory practices and attitudes. We strive to ensure that all individuals, regardless of gender, have equal rights, opportunities, and treatment. This involves addressing systemic barriers and biases to create an environment where everyone feels valued and included. By fostering an inclusive culture, we aim to support diverse perspectives and experiences, promoting fairness and respect in all areas of life.
2. Create Educational/Leadership Opportunities
We are committed to providing educational and leadership opportunities that empower individuals to become advocates for gender equity. This includes offering workshops, seminars, and training programs designed to enhance knowledge and skills related to gender issues. By developing leadership capabilities, we aim to equip individuals with the tools needed to drive change and influence policy, both within their communities and in broader societal contexts. Our focus is on nurturing the next generation of leaders who are informed, motivated, and equipped to address gender disparities.
3. Foster Change and Create Impact
Our organization is dedicated to driving meaningful change and creating a tangible impact in the realm of gender equity. We work to identify and address key areas where gender disparities exist, implementing initiatives and campaigns that challenge the status quo and promote progressive reforms. By collaborating with communities, organizations, and policymakers, we aim to influence attitudes, policies, and practices to achieve long-lasting improvements in gender equity. Our efforts are centered on creating measurable and sustainable change that benefits individuals and society as a whole.
4. Empower the Next Generation
We believe in the importance of investing in the future by empowering young people to become champions of gender equity. Through mentorship, support, and engagement, we seek to inspire and motivate the next generation to take an active role in promoting gender justice. By providing resources, guidance, and opportunities for involvement, we aim to cultivate a new wave of advocates who are passionate about driving progress and creating a more equitable world. Our commitment is to ensure that young leaders are prepared and supported as they take on the challenges and opportunities of tomorrow.
